An Art of Exorcism

Ar-Ruqya Shari’yah

Indisputably, it’s a known fact that Islam, the religion of Allah, is one with laid down rules and regulations. Nothing of the Deen is without its own guideline. While its very wrong to neglect the use of modern medical innovations in caring for various ailments, it’s worthy of note that Islam has a cure for everything. Indeed, it’s a complete religion! The Arabic word ruqya (رُقْيَة) linguistically refers to a verbal incantation or chant, uttered or written, to remove unwanted afflictions like possession and sickness. The plural of ruqya is ruqa (رُقَى). In normal usage, the word is used to refer to the process of expelling jinn from possessed persons, objects and places, and curing evil eye and non-spiritual illnesses and injuries with religious statements, practices and artefacts where medical treatment fails. This is done through the recitations from the Quran, calling unto Allah’s name and prophetic Duas. Conditions That Validates Ruqya Basically, islamic injunctions are of the Qur’an and the sunnah of the prophet (SAW). Individuals have emerged with different ways of calling unto jinn in possessed humans. Yet, many of such attempt, are not acceptable in Islam because they do not fulfill any of the following conditions: 1. The chanted words are Islamic. For example, Qur’an, dhikr and du’a. 2.The words are comprehensible. Language or words that are not intelligible are disallowed. 3.Those taking part in the ruqya must believe that Allah alone cures and causes the words to have an effect. 4. The ruqya should not be performed in a state of major impurity or in an unholy place not suitable for ibadah.

Conditions for the effectiveness of the treatment are of the following: 1.The ruqya treatment to be effective, both the patient and the raqi must satisfy spiritual, legal and social conditions. 2.Expectation of cure from Allah alone. 3.Intention for the cure to take effect through the ruqya treatment. 4.Correct practice of ruqya treatment. 5.Mental and emotional stability of the patient. 6.Consistency in adhering to the ruqya treatment. 7.Support to the patient by family and friends. 8.Refraining from sin.To be continued…
