Colleges of Education to Commence 3-year NCE Plus 2-year Degree Pathway

By Muhammad A. Adedokun
The National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has received Ministerial Directives to transition to a continuous 5-year NCE-Degree programme with the 3-year NCE plus 2-year degree pathway.
The existing operation of Colleges of Education has been the Dual Mandate four (4)-year degree programme, with the 3-year NCE and 4-year degree structure. However, following the Ministerial Directives received by the NCCE, provision has been made for the transition from the existing structure to a 3-year NCE plus 2-year degree pathway.
In an official circular by the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) dated 5th May, 2026, it was stated that: “In line with these directives, all Colleges of Education currently operating the Dual Mandate four (4)-year degree programme are required to discontinue admissions into the programme with effect from the 2026/2027 academic session.”

This is yet another significant progress in Nigeria’s education system, strengthening the value of the NCE qualification as well as making the transition to a bachelor’s degree easier and reducing the duration of completion.
