How to Prevent Yourself from the Cholera Infection (Vibrio cholerae)

Adedokun Muhammad A.
There’s no doubt that human beings are being exposed to a lot of microorganisms as a result of their interactions with the physical world. Among these organisms are the harmless and harmful ones, and the barrier of a microscope is needed to view these organisms. This makes it more challenging to physically prevent yourself from their penetrating attack. Microorganisms could be bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
This article will provide you with the preventive measures against the Vibrio bacterium of the cholerae species, commonly known as Cholera.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium, Vibrio cholerae”. Major symptoms to look out for are severe diarrhoea, vomiting, and dehydration. Cholera remains a global threat to public health which may result in a decline in the efficiency of human activity, hereby causing economic instability, displacement, among others. As dehydration racks the body, blood would begin to thicken in patients’ veins; deprived of oxygen, their skin would turn a sickly shade of blue (blue death).
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), “Researchers have estimated that each year there are 1.3 to 4.0 million cases of cholera, and 21 000 to 143 000 deaths worldwide due to cholera.” With this, it is crucial to know and practice the preventive measures against cholera that have houseflies as its carrier.
A housefly is one of the domestic insects that can easily come in contact with your foods and drinks if care is not properly taken. Hence, a need to take it more seriously. Below are some tips for preventing oneself from getting infected with this Vibrio bacterium of the species Cholerae (Vibrio cholerae).
1. Improved Sanitation and Hygiene
By ensuring the drinking of clean water, proper disposal of waste, and washing of hands with soap and water before handling foods or drinks.
2. Maintaining Food Hygiene
Food should be cooked thoroughly and try as much as possible to avoid raw or undercooked seafood.
3. Public Enlightenment and Awareness
By informing the public about cholera, its causes, and preventive measures and also encouraging good hygiene and sanitation practices.
4. Vaccination
Oral cholera vaccines are available and recommended for high-risk areas as vaccination can provide short-term protection against cholera.
5. Establishment of Effective Disease surveillance and outbreak response systems.
Implementing these preventive measures is crucial in reducing the risk and spread of cholera outbreaks.
