MY TEACHING PRACTICE EXPERIENCE.

By Salam Shukrah
The teaching practice exercise of the Faculty of Education started on the 25th of January 2021. We were posted to different public secondary schools. I was so eager to know where I was posted to. OMG! Mokola again.
On the 25th of January which was on Monday. I went to the school I was assigned to do my Teaching practice( Community Grammar School Mokola Ibadan) on getting there, the principal rejected me because Teaching practice Students were already many and besides the school is not offering history to their students. I was in disarray, I begged the principal that I can teach Government, English, Civic Education aside My Teaching course which is “History” she said No, I was still in her office begging her, she just asked me if I can teach Civic Education, that I’ve mentioned before I said Yes! She then said I should write down my name, that was how the Teaching practice began.
I couldn’t teach on the first day, I was getting the time table and the school procedures, checking the classes I would be teaching, the second day I went to my assigned classes ” Jss2 A and B” I was to teach them Civic Education and Islamic Religious studies”. I introduced myself to the students, they stood to greet me, I asked them to introduce themselves. Day by day I got to know their names and familiarized myself with them, some of these students are slow learner’s, majority of them cannot write their names, not to talk of comprehending the school subjects but some of them are bright and adroit, 80% of them are Hausas, whereby most have low cognitive capacity but nonetheless they’re all amazing.
To talk of the Teachers in the school, Oh Lord! They’re so amazing, to top it all the teachers in my staff are the best, we related like we’ve known one another for long, they guided us with the lesson plan , they signed our Log books, they were always there whenever our supervisors came to supervise us. I can’t but say I had the amazing supervisors, the supervisors that came to supervise me are so lovely, .
However, public schools have a lot of issues to be addressed. I mean a lot! Thé State Government needs to provide a well ventilated classrooms with enough chairs and desks and, because majority of the students are sitting on the floor, or they should bring horrible stools from home, Toilets and conducive environment should be in each schools.
Moreso, for Teachers, there are not enough teachers in school, The Government should employ more experienced Teachers to public schools.
To cut the long experience short, This my second Teaching practice Exercise in Community Grammar School Mokola Ibadan, was the best. My students are awesome, they really showed and are still showing me love, even the Teachers, did I forget to mention that the students and teachers got me gifts!
