PERSONALITY TYPES: NATURE OR NURTURE

By Maryam Hammed Titilayo
Have you ever met someone and immediately thought, “This one was born like this”? Some people are naturally calm; they don’t push things. Some are loud and expressive. Some overthink everything and always take things personally, while others move on without stress. It makes you wonder, are we born with our personalities, or do life shape us into who we become?
Personally, I don’t think it’s just one side. I believe personality is a mixture of both nature and nurture. There are certain traits we seem to carry from birth. For example, you’ll see two children raised in the same house, by the same parents, yet they behave completely differently. One may be bold and talkative, while the other is quiet and observant. It shows that some parts of who we are are already instilled in us from the beginning
However, the environment plays a powerful role too. The way we are raised, the kind of love or discipline we receive, our friendships and interactions with people, our culture and beliefs, and even our struggles or challenges also shape our behaviour. A naturally cheerful child who grows up in a harsh or chaotic environment may become withdrawn. On the other hand, a shy child who grows up around encouragement and support might grow into a confident adult. Life experiences have a way of stretching and reshaping our original traits.
Another thing to consider is how people change over time. The person you were five years ago is not the same person you are today. Experiences teach us lessons. Pain matures us. Success builds confidence. Failure builds resilience. Traumatic events can make a person more cautious, while positive experiences can make a person more open and trusting. If personality were only about nature, then growth would not be possible. But we grow. And that growth proves that nurture also matters.
At the same time, even after all the changes life brings, there are still parts of us that remain constant. A naturally cautious person may learn to take risks, especially when necessary, but deep down, they will still think things through carefully before making decisions. In the same way, someone who is naturally competitive might learn humility and teamwork, yet that inner drive to win or excel never truly leaves them. All these show that even though life might redefine or reshape us, it doesn’t completely erase who we were from the start.
In my opinion, personality is like a seed. Nature plants the seed, but nurture determines how it grows. The soil, the water, the sunlight, all those external factors influence what the seed eventually becomes. You can not separate the two. They work together.
At the end of the day, we are a product of both what we were born with and what we have been through. And maybe that balance is what makes each person unique.
Quote: “Nature may spark the flame, but nurture decides how brightly it burns.”
