Surrounded by Blessings We Often Overlook

By Aliyah Mahmud
In the rush of daily life, it is easy to believe that blessings only come in grand achievements: earning a degree, securing a dream job, owning a house, or reaching a long-awaited milestone. While these are indeed blessings, they are not the only ones. Some of the greatest gifts in life are the ones we become so accustomed to that we no longer notice them.
Every morning we wake up with another chance to live, to learn, to love, and to become better than we were yesterday. That alone is a blessing. The ability to breathe without thinking, to walk, to speak, to see the beauty of the sky, and to hear the voices of those we love are priceless gifts that many people long for. Yet, because they are freely given to us every day, we often take them for granted.
Blessings also come in the form of people. A caring parent, a loyal friend, a helpful teacher, or even a stranger who offers kindness can become a source of comfort during difficult times. Sometimes, the greatest blessing is simply knowing that you are not alone.
Nature constantly reminds us of Allah’s generosity. The warmth of the sun, the coolness of the rain, the food that grows from the earth, and the peaceful rhythm of day and night all reflect His mercy. Every grain of rice we eat and every drop of water we drink are signs of His provision. We may pay for food, but we cannot create life from a seed without His permission.
Even challenges can be hidden blessings. Disappointments teach patience. Failures build resilience. Delays often protect us from what we cannot see. What feels like a closed door today may be Allah guiding us toward something better tomorrow. Looking back, many of us realise that some unanswered prayers were actually acts of divine mercy.
As Muslims, gratitude is more than saying Alhamdulillah with our tongues—it is recognising Allah’s favours with our hearts and using those blessings in ways that please Him. Our knowledge should benefit others. Our wealth should help those in need. Our health should be used to worship and serve. True gratitude is reflected in our actions.
The Qur’an reminds us:
«”And if you were to count the favours of Allah, you could not enumerate them.” (Qur’an 16:18)»
This verse is a powerful reminder that Allah’s blessings are beyond calculation. Some are visible, while others protect us in ways we may never know.
Perhaps the key to a happier life is not having more, but noticing more. When we pause to appreciate the blessings surrounding us, our hearts become lighter, our worries become smaller, and our faith grows stronger. Gratitude transforms ordinary moments into extraordinary gifts.
Today, before wishing for what you do not have, take a moment to appreciate what you already do. You may discover that you are standing in the middle of countless blessings that Allah has been showering upon you all along.
May Allah make us among those who recognise His countless favours, remain grateful in every situation, and use every blessing in ways that earn His pleasure. Ameen.
