THE GREAT WALK.

By Sodamade Bushrah
God has a way of saying yes to our heart desires in a miraculous way. Of course, I do believe in destiny and God’s wonders, but this particular one was different from the usuals.
I was dragging my heavy legs along the road side with my tired body after I had delivered a customer’s cake. It was so sunny that I felt the radiant of the sun on my skin. That day, I wished the song of “if I had a wing…” would just come true, or even teleport home just like I had seen in movies, but this is reality and I didn’t have a charm. So, I hoped I would get home and freshen up.
Suddenly, I heard a loud noise from behind. It was a car that knocked a young man trying to cross the road down. He probably was in my shoes because I could have made that mistake of not looking well before I cross. I got to the accident scene in no time, I had either flied or teleported; what I had prayed for because my walk to the scene was so swift. When I got there, a young man around his mid twenties was lying helplessly in his blood. He was unconscious and the people around were not helping matters too. They crowded him and made series as discussion about the incident, as if that was the next thing to do.
Other people were trying to check if he was dead. I shouted as an old man tried to pull his leg. ‘What if he had a fracture, why would you pull him that what’s?, I questioned. The man looked in surprise and people whispered, “she’s his wife” to themselves. That didn’t mean anything to me. I just wanted him to walk again with his long, slim legs.
I pleaded for space so he could at least regain his consciousness. After several efforts of trying to push them away, I was able to get little space, wide enough to get him some fresh breathe. He was still unconscious, then I had to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him. He gasped, after some time and my joy was partially filled. At least, he’s alive.
In no time, the ambulance came and the police sirene almost deafened me. As he was taken into the ambulance, I followed them and people said “she is his wife, let her in” because the nurse was trying not to let me in.
Finally, after long journey, we got into the hospital and he was rushed into the ward. I waited impatiently at the reception. Now, I knew how scared I was. I could feel my heart beat so fast that I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t lose it.
After some time, a woman rushed in and her “where’s, how’s my son”? made me tell she was his mother. The nurses calmed her down with ‘he’ll be fine, everything is going on well’.
Then, the doctor came out of the ward and asked the nurse some few questions that I wasn’t aware of. But I’m sure he said he asked them how I was related to the man because I overheard the nurse say, she’s just a good Samaritan from the report she gave. The man said, ‘madam, may I see you’, referring to the patient’s mother.
The woman came out with a face of relief and I was a bit happy for I was sure everything was alright. She walked up to me and stretched her hand to shake me as she said “hey, darling”. I answered her warmly as I took her hand. She was so excited as we talked and after series of talk, I realised he was her only son, and that she was an Engineer in an oil company. I had told her about my love for medical profession and she was so amazed at all I said. She said, “Wow, what an amazing person you are, I love ambitious people like this”. I smiled and replied that it was what I was made for. I can’t stand seeing people in distress without rendering a help and she could not stop the tears. You’ve made me so happy and you know, the doctor told me you saved him from not getting more injury.
Then, she promised that she would sponsor my education into the medical school in United States and said I would be her daughter.
