THE PACE OF TIME

By: Rahmah

I wish I could hold it with a rope
and not leave it until I wish
but impossible it is,
for that is the decree,
to continue to run
without waiting for anyone.
Oh Lord,
how do I meet up with its pace!
It keeps running like in haste.

I stopped following when I couldn’t keep up
but I found myself melting
melting in agony
and unfulfilled goals,
as each day breaks,
as each night passes.
I cried and cried,
but it never waited for me
I shouted for it to come back
but time never looked back.
In my sorrow,
I looked to my left

and saw a heap of refuse
my abandoned works, goals, aims
I looked at my right
It was the same
unfulfilled wishes, unaccomplished goals.
I sat with regret
and blamed time for my misfortune.
But was time ever at fault?
A voice whispers to me.
Its nature has been defined
to run as if in haste
carrying along only
those who run with it.

I soon realised my mistakes
distractions, laziness
procrastination, fear
these lowered my speed
that I couldn’t meet up with time
but that was before
now the regret has been swallowed
I shall now run after time
and catch up with it.

A deeply insightful exploration. The balance between academic discipline and spiritual consciousness is precisely what our student body needs today.

Jazakumullahu Khayran to the editorial team. The references from Surah Taha were especially grounding.
