The People Allah Surrounds Us With

By Aliyah Mahmud
Perhaps the people Allah surrounds us with are also a sign of His beauty and mercy.
We often think of blessings as the things we receive, the opportunities that come our way, the duas that are answered, the doors that open, and the difficulties that are taken away. But sometimes, a blessing is not a thing at all. Sometimes, it is a person.
There is something beautiful about the way Allah allows different people to become part of our lives. Some bring comfort, some bring laughter, some offer wisdom, and others challenge us in ways that encourage growth. Some people remind us of who we are, while others remind us of who we are capable of becoming.
It is easy to overlook these blessings because people can become familiar. We get used to their presence, their kindness, their messages, their encouragement, and the little ways they make life easier. But familiarity should never make us blind to blessings.
Perhaps that is why gratitude requires reflection.
To pause and realise that the person who checked on you, the friend who stood beside you, the teacher who believed in you, the stranger who showed you kindness, or the person who made a difficult season a little easier may all be part of Allah’s mercy reaching you through another human being.
And not every person is meant to remain forever. Some people are lessons. Some are reminders. Some are companions for particular seasons. Their purpose in our lives may be different, but their presence can still carry wisdom.
This also reminds us of the kind of people we should strive to be.
If Allah has allowed us to become a source of comfort, encouragement, kindness, or hope for someone else, then perhaps we too are being used as a means through which His mercy reaches another heart.
What a beautiful responsibility that is.
So perhaps we should look around a little more carefully.
Beyond the obvious blessings, there may be countless forms of mercy standing beside us, sitting with us, praying for us, teaching us, encouraging us, and simply being present.
Alhamdulillah for the blessings we recognise, and Alhamdulillah for the ones we are still learning to notice.
Perhaps the people Allah surrounds us with are among the quietest and most beautiful signs of His mercy.
