Balancing Books and Barokah

Akinpelu Fatimoh.
In the period of exams, when books pile high and stress begins to weigh heavily, it’s easy for students to forget the most important source of strength—Allah.
We wake early to revise, attend lectures, and memorise notes. We put in effort, which is essential. But in the process, some students neglect their obligations to Allah, especially Solah (prayer), thinking they need “just a little more time” to study.
Yet, who truly gives success?
Who grants a sound memory, understanding, and peace of mind?
It is Allah, the One who said:
“And whosoever fears Allah, He will make a way for him and provide for him from where he never expected.”
Qur’an 65:2-3
No matter how much we study, true barakah (blessing) in time, knowledge, and results only comes from Him. Prayer is not a burden; it is a divine connection that strengthens us and brings tranquillity amidst pressure.
Solah is five short moments across the day. These few minutes will not set you back; instead, they will carry you forward. To skip prayer in order to study is like refusing to drink water while running a long race. The longer you run, the more your body thirsts. The longer you study, the more your soul needs Allah.
Also, make du’a. Cry to Allah if you must. He hears even the silent whispers of the worried heart. Recite the du’a of Prophet Musa (peace be upon him):
“رَبِّ اشْرَحْ لِي صَدْرِي، وَيَسِّرْ لِي أَمْرِي…”
“O my Lord, expand for me my chest and ease my task for me…”
Qur’an 20:25-26
Success in exams does not lie in sleepless nights alone, but in placing our trust where it truly belongs. When you walk into the exam hall with both preparation and tawakkul (reliance on Allah), that is when success is complete.
So read your books. Revise thoroughly. But above all, hold firmly to Allah. Give Him His right. Don’t trade Solah for grades. Don’t pause your worship for your GP.
Because when you remember Allah, He remembers you.
And when He is with you, nothing can stand against you.
May Allah grant all students ease, understanding, barakah in time, and success in this world and the next. Aameen.
