LIFE’S REAL NAME

Life revealed its color
In our fashion school
A second time
“Customers are always right” is our mantra
Inscribed in our hearts is “the mistress first!”
Our lunches and naps are taken away
And of us are missers of prayers
For clients’ dresses must be sight-blowing
So this day
A part denied their stomachs
As it rumbles loudly for a piece of meal
Some had the gut and abandoned the dhuhr prayer
Some left at night
And denied their family the right to food
For the rich bride – client must assume a princess
In her attire
Alas! aunty arrived early the next dawn
And announces the shift of the deal day!
And that the dress
Which we toiled for
Must have a changed look
Gone is every reminder of our collective toil
Amidst dry smiles and regret,
We concluded:
This life is not worth our whole being!
And perhaps if we died for it,
It would lament that we didn’t die well!
