The Islamic Perspective on Gambling

By Adeshile Aishah Oyindamola

In Islam, gambling is strictly prohibited and considered a major sin. The Arabic term for gambling is “Maisir” or “Qimar”, and it is clearly condemned in the Qur’an and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Gambling refers to any game of chance where people risk money or valuables hoping to win more, often leading to addiction, loss, and destruction of wealth and relationships.

Qur’anic Prohibition:

The Qur’an addresses gambling in several verses, most clearly in Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:90–91):

“O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling (Maisir), sacrificing to stones, and divination by arrows are abominations of Satan’s handiwork. So avoid them that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So, will you not abstain?

This verse links gambling with other major sins and highlights its destructive effects on society and individuals, such as creating hatred, enmity, and distraction from worship.

    Reasons for Prohibition:

1. Unjust Gain: Gambling involves taking money without working for it. Islam promotes fair trade and earning through halal (lawful) means. In gambling, one party gains at the expense of another, which is unjust and exploitative.

2. Addiction and Harm: Gambling can become addictive and lead to severe emotional, financial, and mental health issues. It ruins families and relationships, and many gamblers fall into debt or even crime.

3. Waste of Wealth: Islam teaches responsible spending and discourages wasting wealth. Gambling contradicts this by encouraging risk and the loss of money in useless activities.

4. Moral and Spiritual Corruption: Gambling often leads to a weakening of moral values, greed, and neglect of religious duties such as prayer and remembrance of Allah.

   Scholarly Consensus:

There is Ijma’ (consensus) among Islamic scholars that gambling in all forms is haram (forbidden), whether through dice, betting, lotteries, or modern-day online gambling platforms. Even if one wins, the earnings are considered impure (haram) and cannot be used for halal purposes.

Alternatives and Islamic Guidance

Islam encourages entertainment and leisure, but within moral and halal boundaries. Sports, games, and competitions are allowed as long as they do not involve gambling or betting. Muslims are urged to find joy and relaxation in ways that are beneficial and not harmful to themselves or others.

Conclusion:

From an Islamic perspective, gambling is a dangerous and destructive practice that not only affects individuals but also families and communities. It is associated with sin, social harm, and the loss of values. Muslims are advised to avoid it completely and seek halal means of earning, entertainment, and success in both this world and the hereafter.
