The Victims and How Their Words Paint You.

By Aishat Adeyanju
Why do people always have something to say? Do you have friends or acquaintances who paint people in colours that match their skin tone? Some people always feel the need to comment, judge, or weigh in on others’ lives. It’s like that is what they strive on, what feeds them, and what satisfies their inner desires.
They pick up small things – your walking style, your talking style, or even that dress they’ve seen you in like three times. It doesn’t matter if you’re quiet, easy-going, or struggling. All that matters is that they need to paint you a colour that only exists in their imagination. But what they don’t know is that they are always colour blind.
Have you ever read about Confirmation bias in Cognitive psychology?! This is the tendency for people to notice, interpret, and remember information in a way that confirms their existing beliefs. In other words, people filter reality through their own beliefs, often ignoring facts that contradict their view. No matter how hard you try, you can’t win them over because they are so out of it that they have become the lies they constantly fed themselves.
While you keep walking on eggshells for their comments about your life, they don’t seem to care at all. Unless you are someone who pays no attention to their existence, trust me, the next time they see you, they’ll tell you how fat you have grown.
And when they discuss, they always complain about that one friend who is not a good friend. When they speak, it’s as if they are poets; they make the emotions flow so well. You actually feel bad for them, and as a result, you end up not liking this friend.
Listening to them is like watching a thriller movie. It gives you chills. You start wondering if the emotions were ever real, or if they just needed an audience. Because somehow, no matter how long you think about it, they always manage to paint themselves as the hurt ones.
The misunderstood one.
The victim.
And before you know it, you’ve carried a hate that doesn’t belong to you. A battle that was never yours.
